Holiday cottages for August
Balmy sunny days, outdoor swimming, fabulous festivals and a Bank Holiday to enjoy
Lazy summer days dangling your feet in the cool water of one of the Cotswolds’ many rivers is a must. To enjoy a sunny and watery scene, head out with a picnic and rolled-up trousers. Choose from the River Windrush in Winchcombe or Burford, the River Coln at Coln St Aldwyns or Fairford, or the River Churn in Cirencester.
If you’re a sports (and silliness!) fan, Bourton-on-the-Water is the place for you. Its unique football in the river match is held between two teams from the Bourton Rovers Football Club. If you don’t want to get soaked then stand back from the riverbank. Half the fun of the game is soaking the spectators! Kick off is the August Bank Holiday.
If you like your water cool but regulated then opt for one of the Cotswolds’ outdoor swimming pools. There is one at Cirencester, Chipping Norton, Stroud and Cheltenham. If open water is more your thing, book a swim or a paddleboard session. Head to Cotswold Water Park or the deep and cool water of Cromwall Quarry. Visitors with children should head to the fabulous Cotswold Country Park and Beach. You can swim, play on a sandy beach, picnic, paddle, windsurf or hurl yourself around the Aquaventure inflatable park.
With the August weather generally being warm and dry, it’s a great month to don your colourful gear and head to a festival or two. This month sees the return of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Wilderness Festival at Cornbury Park Estate near Charlbury, and The Big Feastival at Kingham near Chipping Norton.
If you prefer something a little more sedate then relax and hire a boat at Lechlade on Thames. Pootle down the river for the day, returning to your hand-picked cottage in time to relax in the garden with a glass of something cool. See below for our cottages for August.
