Fairford is perhaps best known for the annual Royal International Air Tattoo at the nearby airbase, which attracts thousands of visitors to see aircraft displays by over 25 nations. There is, however, more to attract visitors to this delightful market town than the air show, with its peaceful setting on the River Coln, a tributary of the Thames, providing a pretty backdrop and focus point for walking and fly fishing. The town has a beautiful church, St Mary’s, famed for its medieval stained-glass windows, a bustling centre with independent shops, cafés and a weekly market.
Lechlade-on-Thames is a charming market town in the southeast corner of Gloucestershire, bordering Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. It is on the highest navigable point of the River Thames and is considered one of the gateways to the Cotswolds. Head to Ha’penny Bridge to watch the boats glide below along the Thames or sit in the garden of one of the riverside pubs and enjoy the wildlife and boating activity. The town has a great café culture, with the popular Lynford & Co at its heart, as well as several unique boutiques, antique-retro shops, and the famous Christmas Shop.
Fairford and Lechlade in Gloucestershire are just a few miles to the northeast of the Cotswold Water Park, a 42-square-mile outdoor activities mecca, with over 180 lakes interlinked by footpaths and bridleways with a fantastic range of land- and water-based activities for every age, including kayaking, canoeing, sailing, water skiing and fishing, as well as relaxed swimming and playing at the lovely soft sandy beach and lagoon.
