Black and white buildings, creative and inspiring Ledbury
Ledbury is a bustling market town that lies to the west of the undulating Malvern Hills. This is a vibrant and happily twee-free, creative place packed with antique shops, art galleries and independent boutiques. It retains a strong sense of place and community and is the perfect place from which to explore.
With origins that can be traced back to AD690, Ledbury is a town full of history which is clearly evident everywhere you turn. Glorious black and white timber-framed houses line the streets. Whilst in the centre of town you’ll find the Grade I listed Market Hall. Work on the hall started in 1617 but it would take 50 years to complete. The shouts of traders still echo between the pillars at the twice-weekly market that takes place to this day.
Literary lovers will enjoy the award-winning Poetry Festival. This takes place each July and attracts local names as well as famous stars. Notable residents from the past include the poet Elizabeth Barret Browning, and composer Edward Elgar. Elgar lived just outside the town in a house called The Firs and it was here he composed many of his famous works.
Ledbury is also where you will find Eastnor Castle. You can explore the state rooms before enjoying the surrounding deer park and arboretum. The castle also holds several popular events throughout the year including Lakefest and the Chilli Festival. The town is also perfectly placed for exploring some of the UK’s most incredibly beautiful natural areas. These include the Wye Valley and Symonds Yat, the Forest of Dean, and the ever-present Malvern Hills, which offer some truly exceptional walking.
Ledbury is nothing short of inspiring, and the local producers thrive in this environment. There are many artisan cider and juice makers dotted about the area, including Weston’s Cider and Pixley Berries. Discover Ledbury and choose your Herefordshire bolthole below.
