Experience the thrills and spills of the Badminton Horse Trials up close and personal

The Badminton Horse Trials are regarded as the most important horse trials in the UK. They take place each May on the beautiful Gloucestershire estate. Home to the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort, it’s always a wonderful spectacle. We have an array of cottages near the Badminton Horse Trials so you can experience the event for yourself.

The 10th Duke of Beaufort started these impressive horse trials in 1949. He had attended the 1948 Olympics in London and was a spectator at the three-day event. Here he noted that the British team had little success. With the strong legacy of hunting and racing tradition in Great Britain the duke believed this was an Olympic event we should excel in. His idea was an annual competition to be held on his estate at Badminton. This would give riders experience and could be used in the training and selection of the Olympic team.

The Badminton Horse Trials are today, a fully-fledged impressive event. There is a wealth of attractions to entertain both young and old, and the shopping village has more than 500 retailers. In addition, there is a vast array of fabulous food and drink to enjoy. Options include a sit-down lunch restaurant, picnic delicacies and a traditional pub experience. There is something to suit all. If however, the thrill of the jumps isn’t enough you can try your hand at the Isuzu Off-Road Challenge, enjoy all the fun of the fair, or bring your dog along for the dog agility course.

We have several cottages near the Badminton Horse Trials, ranging from traditional country escapes to beautiful manor houses and barn conversions. Badminton lies in the heart of the Cotswolds and it’s a truly beautiful area to explore.
