Sudeley Castle & Gardens

Alderton, Blockley, Bourton-on-the-Hill, Broadway, Cheltenham, Greet, Winchcombe

Arts & Culture Experience

Sudeley Castle is thought of as one of the most beautiful castles in England and within it’s equally spectacular grounds you can meander through ten well-manicured gardens. Just outside the village of Winchcombe it is a popular destination which hosts events and exhibitions throughout the year. The team focuses on putting on seasonal events such as The Spectacle of Light in Winter. These dazzling illuminations turns the castle into a wonderland of magically lit displays among the romantic ruins and glorious gardens. Other events have included a digital safari where you can virtually meet some of the world’s animals and walk amongst life-size sculptures.

With both ruins and elegant castle rooms to explore you can immerse yourself in its history. Today you can visit the original 15th century west wing and exhibitions. The east wing is occasionally still in use by the Dent family who have owned the castle since 1837. Intricately detailed bedrooms, the library and Katherine Parr’s anterooms are some of the spaces you can visit. Parr’s tomb lies in St Mary’s Church in the castle grounds; she is the only English queen to be buried on private land.

Surrounding the castle are ten unique gardens. Following pathways around the grounds it is a pleasant walk. From the picturesque ruins of the banqueting hall covered in roses, the herb garden to the colourful secret garden you’re sure to find your favourite spot to rest a while. There is also an adventure playground and a fun fort to keep the little ones entertained.

Guided tours are available which cover both the castle and gardens to give more in-depth history, or you can book to see the private apartments and artwork. These tours take you into parts of the castle not usually open to the public.

On the edge of the Sudeley Estate are the castle cottages, each with their own individual charm. When you book one of these cottages you receive free entry to Sudeley Castle and Gardens during your stay. All other guests of Bolthole Retreats can receive a 25% discount on admission. Visit your Guest Login for more information.

To note: Sudeley Castle & Gardens reopens for the season on 4 March 2024.
