The Wilson
Cheltenham
Arts & Culture Experience
Gloucestershire’s premier art gallery and museum, The Wilson, houses internationally significant collections. The museum houses artwork by the Cheltenham born explorer Edward Wilson who was part of two Antarctic expeditions. He was a naturalist, artist and doctor and the collection of items show the story of his time in the Antarctic.
There are also a number of pieces which tell the story of the history of Cheltenham. From its years as a spa town to today when it draws tourists from around the world you can learn more about this regency town. Other significant collections include pieces from the Arts & Crafts movement. The Cotswolds were popular with the artist William Morris and here you can see some of his work. For children, there is the WOW gallery to ensure there is something to interest everybody here.
Alongside these collections, regularly changing exhibitions from artists across the globe welcome visitors. A vast range of subjects are covered and you will be in for an altogether different surprise each time you visit. The Wilson is also incredibly active with the community and hosts workshops and a community art gallery which showcases local talent. During your visit you have the chance to vote for what you would like to be on display at future exhibitions as well making this a truly community led space.
A number of these local artists are part of the We are Creators studio programme at The Wilson. This fantastic scheme provides studio space to encourage artists to grow. The artists also work with The Wilson to develop opportunities to involve residents in a wider aspect of art.
After visiting the gallery we encourage you to spend time at the Wilson Kitchen. Families are welcome and artwork is also on display here. The menus cover breakfast and lunch with drinks cakes and pastries also available. You will also find the Cheltenham Tourist Information Centre here.
