Overview
Full of warmth and character, Chequers Cottage is a welcoming retreat with an expanse of Cotswold countryside just outside your front door and Cheltenham Spa a short drive away. The perfect base for a serene stay in the Cotswolds, the owners have brought this accommodation to life with pieces from their extensive travels, creating a house that truly tells a story. From the cubby hole recessed into the wall for the front door handle to go into, to the raffia wall hanging made by an indigenous Congolese tribe, there is intrigue around every corner.
The tranquil colour scheme of this homestay exudes calm, creating an atmosphere where you can really get away from it all. Play a game of bridge beside the fire, take time to yourself to read in the atmospheric study or lounge looking out at the village green. Two bedrooms embrace a French riviera aesthetic with gentle florals and natural fabrics. The third adds a spark of colour with ink blue flooring and yellow accents.
Afternoons can be spent in the sun-drenched garden or following one of the many trails with dogs at your heel. Find farmer’s markets and antique shops, strolling the nearby Cotswold towns and villages, from Cheltenham to Stroud. Or perhaps try something a bit more unusual and take an alpaca for a walk in the next door village of Cowley.
Ground floor
Kitchen/Diner:
Flooded with light the dining area overlooks the village green, while the chef of your group is rewarded with a fully-equipped kitchen and a garden view. Throw open the windows and cook up a feast, mingling the fresh air with the aroma of just baked bread. You will find antique furniture, beautiful tiling, an original fireplace and a set of vintage china in this welcoming kitchen.
Living Room:
Embrace the inviting ambience of the living room, with Moroccan wall lamps, wooden flooring, richly coloured fabrics and Mbuti Pygmy wall hanging all adding to the warming comfort of this room. Light the fire with a glass of wine to wind down at the end of the day. Relax with your music playing on the Marshall speaker in the background, watch a film together or perhaps play a game of cards at the baize topped table.
Study:
For those that can’t leave work behind, or simply want some time to themselves, the study is tucked away at the back of the house. Catch up on e-mails at the leather topped desk or curl up with a book in the cosy armchair.
Cloakroom:
Returning from a country walk, the cloakroom is perfect for a quick freshen up before dinner.
First Floor
Bedroom One:
Fresh tones and natural fibres make bedroom one a relaxing space. It is light and airy, easing you into restfulness as you relax before a fantastic night’s sleep in the incredibly comfortable bed.
Bedroom Two:
Similarly styled to the first bedroom, with the same beautiful view out over of the valley, this room is a breath of fresh air. With delicately floral wallpaper and crisp linens it is a tranquil haven.
Bedroom Three:
The final bedroom encompasses an alternative style, its ink blue floor and splashes of yellow making it a joy to stay in.
Bathroom:
Fill the rolltop bath with bubbles and soak a while, or have a rejuvenating shower to start the day. The bathroom is like stepping into a spa with beautiful tiling, underfloor heating, and a delightful view over the rear garden.
Outside
The garden at Chequers Cottage is made for long summer days, barbequing or playing fetch with the dogs while the children play. Lovely old house in a pretty setting. Recommend for a weekend away in the Cotswolds area.
Ed
Had a lovely time at this beautiful cottage in idyllic surroundings.

Chequers Cottage is a lovely cottage in a perfect location for visiting the Cotswolds. It was clean on arrival and had a fully equipped kitchen. 3 spacious double bedrooms were perfect for 4 adults. Harriet, the host, responded within 30 minutes to a query on our first evening. There are lots of lovely local walks and The Green Dragon Inn and Farm shop within a mile was ideal. Would definitely recommend.
Clare
Loved this property as a base for the Cheltenham festival and to retreat from the madness of town during the week. Would go back!

Quiet and comfortable

It was easy to arrive with the guidance provided by email. The cottage was very comfortable, the only downside was that the corridor was very cold and the dining room/kitchen were difficult to warm up (cold coming on from the window frames and fireplace) but other than that it was great, the kitchen was fully equipes and we had plenty of toilet paper available (always handy if you arrive late). There was a working fireplace in the living room, and cards and board games for the family. We had a great time!
Raquel
Cosy, nicely decorated, excellent warm bathroom and lovely living room and kitchen diner. The beds were comfortable and the whole place felt very homely. It was also lovely to have a decent supply of logs for the fire. Many thanks.

My family and I had a wonderful time staying here. It was so idyllic and perfectly located. We can’t wait to return.

We absolutely loved staying in this property as a family! A beautiful cottage inside and out, situated within stunning countryside. Ideal location for Cheltenham Racecourse which we drove to and from each day taking c.15-20mins. Three spacious double rooms upstairs with a shared family bathrooms. A fabulous walk-in shower and bath which enabled a post racing relax with hot water for others. It was warm, clean and tidy, with everything we needed from coffee to cooking utensils. Not to forget the log burner! We would love to book again on another occasion. Highly recommend- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a lovely stay as a family of four with our two dogs. The house was comfortable, private, and perfectly located for exploring the area. We enjoyed peaceful walks nearby and found it easy to reach a great mix of activities and places by car. We’d happily stay again.

Chequers Cottage

The Cottage is utterly charming typical Cotswold stone. Located in a quiet hamlet, the beautiful walks are literally on the doorstep. The beds are comfortable & the sheets & pillows good quality. The staircase is painted & quite shallow so be careful, I think a stair gate would be a good idea for children & to prevent dogs wandering, as we know they both tend to get up to mischief!
Roll top bath a nice touch, and two toilets is always welcome. Not sure however how comfortable 6 people possibly with a child would work in the lounge as its very small & sofas small too.. but all in all we enjoyed our adventure in the beautiful Cotswolds. The Green Dragon pub is excellent so definitely take a look!

Katie
Lovely well appointed cottage. Comfy beds! Would recommend.
Ed
A beautiful cottage with 3 large double bedrooms with really comfy beds. The kitchen and dining area were really homely and a perfect place to spend time with family. A cosy living room to sit and watch a film. There was a great walk out the back of the property and all the wonderful charm of the Cotswolds on your doorstep. The local pub, The Green Dragon, is a few minutes by car and was excellent for dinner. We would definitely book again. Highly recommended.
Jennie
Lovely property in a gorgeous location. Would recommend.
Katharine
Beautiful, authentic, tastefully decorated cottage. We would like to go back and discover more of the area or enjoy a good book in the garden/ by the fireplace.
Patrick
Beautiful building and location, but needs a lot of attention inside.

The building and the location are wonderful. but inside there were many disappointments that could have been prevented.
The property felt like it was due a thorough deep clean. I would suggest that the owner stays in the property for a few days to discover what needs addressing.
In the kitchen, the oven/microwave/fridge were all dirty inside. The washing machine and dishwasher needed cleaning but were in fine working order. The cabinet organiser broke. The saucepan lids contained old, dirty liquid. The cheese grater handle wasn't attached. In the living room I found trash on the floor and under sofa cushions. The sofas felt a little dirty and grimy, it wasn't a comfortable room to relax in.
Upstairs, the bathroom was usable, however the shower head was broken (I did notify the owner), and if the head wasn't pointed at exactly the right angle, water flooded underneath the bath so lots of towels were needed on the floor to soak it up. I notified the owner of the mouldy non slip mat in the shower, that was a real turn off. The grouting and shower needed a good scrub. The hot tap of the sink was loose. The wall around the toilet was dirty and paint peeling. The front two bedrooms were ok, however again, dirty walls, and "shabby chic" furniture that felt grimy. We didn't use the laundry hamper or chests of drawers for that reason. The beds and bedding were comfortable. We didn't use the back bedroom, the smell in there was awful. It smelled like old animal urine, ingrained in the floorboards or furniture. We aired the entire house whenever we were in, but the smell lingered, and remained on clothes that we stored in the room. The window latch in that room was missing a screw.
The information folder that was left was useful, however it would have been useful to have had a sheet saying which bins to put out when instead of including a long web address for the occupier to look up. Perhaps a picture of where to put the bins too.
Outside the property was fine, I watered the plants in the garden as it was at the end of the heatwave and they were very thirsty. The table and chairs in the garden were comfortable enough but a couple of chairs I saw on were wobbly and probably needed bolts tightening. I picked up bottle tops from the grass and threw them away. The floodlight in the backyard was always on, I couldn't find a switch to turn it off.
It would have been helpful to have had 2 door keys. There was a second key that I have no idea what it opened. I didn't not feel comfortable leaving the key in the lock box as I don't know how many other people know the combination.
I contacted the owner when we first arrived to notify of some cleanliness problems and she was quick to respond and the lady who cleans the house came out promptly. We were staying for 2 weeks so perhaps I noticed things that someone staying for a couple of nights may not. I would recommend the property if it was cleaner and in better working order, for the price I was expecting a higher standard. In the state it was in when we stayed there, I would not recommend it.

Lovely stay in the Cotswolds

Stayed here with a small group of friends whilst attending a wedding nearby. Lovely cottage with three bedrooms and spacious communal spaces. We particularly enjoyed the fireplace in the sitting room. The little village is quiet and there are beautiful views over the fields
Edward
Comfortable and relaxing stay

The house was very conveniently located. Really appreciated the good quality furnishings, bedding and towels.
It would have been good to have a mit to open the wood burner door. One other thing that would have been good is some milk and a few essentials for the morning as we didnt have time to collect these en route. Id happily pay more to have that.
