“Cotswold stone on the banks of the River Avon”
A gateway to the Southern Cotswolds, Bradford-on-Avon is a historic wonderland steeped in ancient stories. The River Avon runs through the town, and it is surrounded by glorious countryside just 7 miles from Bath.
Discover the past at the 14th century tithe barn, described by English Heritage as one of the finest examples in the country. On open days a medieval pilgrim chapel which sits amongst the arches of the town bridge opens its doors to visitors.
In the centre of the town explore The Shambles, now a haven of independent shops and cafes which was once used for market days in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, the old market hall no longer stands but you can see a 15th century timber framed house and keep an eye out for old shop names that still remain.
Nearby Bath is a fascinating day out where you can learn about the history of Jane Austen and explore the Roman Baths or head a bit further afield to Stonehenge and Longleat where the whole family will be entertained.

As you cross the town bridge over the River Avon you will see the old blind house. What is thought to have originally been a chapel was rebuilt as a lock up during the 1700s. It became known as the ‘blind house’ as it has no windows and prisons were kept here before they could be brought before the magistrate.
