Spectacle of Light
Winchcombe
Events Experience
Month: December
Sudeley Castle is a beautiful Grade I listed castle, deep in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. It lies just outside the medieval town of Winchcombe and is an unquestionably popular attraction. The expansive gardens and dramatic ruins provide a spectacular backdrop for the after-dark experience that is the Spectacle of Light.
This seasonal event is now in its eighth year and takes visitors on a fantastical, illuminated trail around the stunning Sudeley Castle grounds. Features include a mesmerising field of fire, flickering flowers in the Queens’ garden, a light wave on the Mulberry Lawn and wonderful music at this magical after-dark experience in Winchcombe. The theme this year is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. As you explore the beautifully lit gardens meet Dorothy, Toto, Tinman, Scarecrow, and the Lion as they make their way to the Emerald City, hopefully without encountering the Wicked Witch. See the romantic ruins ablaze with colour. Ancient trees likewise glow against the dark night skies and glistening water features sparkle and twinkle in the lights. It is undoubtedly a truly magical experience for all ages and the perfect way to get the festive spirit flowing.
As you explore you can enjoy mulled wine and hot chocolate along the trail. Then tuck into hot dogs, pulled pork, chilli fries and doughnuts on the Castle Terrace.
The Spectacle of Lights is open on selected evenings from late November through to the end of December and therefore pre-booking is necessary. Tickets are based on allocated timeslots throughout the evening and the trail takes around one to one and a half hours to complete. You are however welcome to stay as long as you wish.
