Your ultimate guide to the Cheltenham Festival

4 Days, 28 Races, 1 Roar: Is It Really Worth the Hype?

Cheltenham transforms during Festival week. The early morning buzz, tweed and fascinators, the pop of champagne corks and that unmistakable roar from Prestbury Park as the first race begins. It’s one of the most electric weeks of the year. And the best way to experience it? Your own place to stay, just minutes from the action.

We’ve curated a collection of homes perfect for race days and relaxed evenings, plus a few insider tips to help you make the most of every moment. Read on to find out what makes it so special…

Tip 1: Stay Close to the Action

Montpellier, Cheltenham

Festival traffic builds early and stays late. Staying near Cheltenham Racecourse means less time queuing and more time enjoying the atmosphere. Plus, you’ll want time for that pre-races fry-up and the ‘après-race’ scene.

If you are looking to grab breakfast on the leisurely mid-morning stroll toward Pittville and eventually the racecourse, Winchcombe Street is a great place to start, with multiple high quality and low-cost places to grab a fry up, like Spencer’s Cafe or Revival Cafe Bar and Grill.

The town transforms after the last race. Areas like Montpellier and The Brewery Quarter become hubs for live music, Irish craic, and celebrations. Staying nearby means you can enjoy a Guinness (or three) without worrying about driving or the long wait for a taxi.

DID YOU KNOW? Over 250,000 pints of Guinness and 8,000 gallons of tea and coffee are consumed during the event.

Tip 2: Arrive Early

Cheltenham Racecourse

The famous “Cheltenham Roar” as the first race begins is a moment you don’t want to miss. Gates open around 10:30am and the town gets busy quickly, so make sure you leave time for that pre-racing fry up, the parade ring and soaking up the atmosphere before racing starts.

Our suggested ‘perfect’ Race Day timeline:

  • 9:00 AM: Fuel up in the town centre. A proper full English is fuel for the long day ahead.
  • 10:00 AM: Walk to the course through Pittville Park. It’s a grand, Regency runway of tweed and anticipation (plus, you’ll dodge the traffic gridlock).
  • 10:30 AM: Gates open. Grab a coffee and head to the parade ring.
  • 11:30 AM: The bars start buzzing. Place your early bets to avoid the rush.
  • 12:30 PM: Find your spot on the rail or in the stands.
  • 1:30 PM: The Roar. Don’t miss it.

DID YOU KNOW? £2,400,000 was taken from cash machines in 2019!

Tip 3: Leave Your Stillettos at Home

Cheltenham is not Ascot. Think Holland Cooper, not Emilia Wickstead. While the Festival is a masterclass in style, it’s a different breed of glamour. Thanks to its position at the foot of Cleeve Hill, the wind can be bone-chillingly cold, even when it’s sunny in town. Swap the stilettos for boots and the silk for shearling; you’ll thank us by the last race.

This practical elegance is a huge part of the ‘Cheltenham Magic.’ It creates an atmosphere that feels rugged, authentic, and unapologetically British. Unlike other meets where the fashion can feel forced, Cheltenham racegoers look ready for anything—from a sudden downpour to a celebratory sprint to the winner’s enclosure.”

Need help mastering the ‘Country-Cool’ look? From timeless tweed to the perfect pair of boots, discover the local boutiques and brands that define race-week style in our Cheltenham Fashion Guide.

DID YOU KNOW? In the Club Enclosure, the ‘poshest’ area, you will still see 90% of men in suits and ties and women in high-end millinery. Fancy dress is actually still banned here!

Tip 4: Plan Ahead for Your Evenings

The best tables in town are often claimed months before the first race. If you have a specific restaurant in mind, we recommend reserving your spot well in advance of March.

However, many of our guests find the real ‘win’ is bypassing the post-race crowds entirely. Why fight for a taxi and a noisy table when you can bring the evening home? Whether it’s a high-end local takeaway, a bespoke grazing board from a Cotswold deli, or a private chef to prepare a four-course feast at your dining table, staying in allows you to truly unwind. After a long day on your feet at the course, there is no greater luxury than a log fire, a glass of wine, and no reservation required.

Ready to join the roar?

The best way to experience the Festival is to have a sanctuary to return to after the last race. Our properties offer more than just a place to sleep – they provide the ultimate Cotswold experience. Whether you want to be in the heart of the action or tucked away in the hills, secure your Festival retreat now, or plan ahead for 2027.
