St Kenelm Cottage is a charming and carefully restored, 3-bedroom apartment set on the upper floors of a converted paper mill. St Kenelm sleeps 4 guests in 1 double room and 2 single rooms, with 1 family bathroom. Overview

St. Kenelm is a first floor apartment that was completely refurbished in February 2017, including a new kitchen, bathroom, and soft furnishings throughout. The apartment was restored from a paper mill to make spectacular accommodation with exposed stone walls and original beams. It is named after St Kenelm, who was a member of the royal family of Mercia, a boy king and martyr, who was murdered by an ambitious relative, and his body was transported by the Monks of Winchcombe to become a major shrine.

Please note the apartment entrance is on the first floor, accessed up external stone steps, there are then internal stairs leading up to the apartment. The first floor of the apartment comprises of an open-plan lounge, dining area, and fully equipped kitchen, and the apartment boasts views over the nearby river and cottage courtyard. Upstairs there are three bedrooms. One double bedroom and two single rooms, perfect for friends sharing or children who prefer having some privacy!

We found St Kenelm to be a great place to stay. There are two flights of stairs to the front door and no private outdoor space, so would not suit everyone. It was comfortable inside and had everything we needed. It was nice and clean where it matters although dusty, dirty and cobwebby around the windows. The internet was good enough to stream live tv, which we like. Well located for walking the local area and a short walk for your free entry to Sudeley castle. There was plenty of parking space so no issues parking. We found it to be nice and quiet during our week, but with around 10 properties on the site in close proximity many with outdoor areas, you would be somewhat reliant on the consideration of the other guests. But as i say we had no issues during our stay and would recommend.

Lovely Apartment

Verified Up Front Reviews
This is a lovely apartment in a secluded cul-de-sac of cottages. It is well appointed, albeit relatively small, but still fine for our family (2 adults and 2 teenagers). The town of Winchcombe is only a short walk away, and there is a well maintained footpath leading to the Castle grounds and entrance. The free access to the castle is a real bonus.

Well placed for a short break

Verified Up Front Reviews
St Kenelm is part of a quirky little set of cottages in the grounds of Sudeley Castle. Really well located for a walk into Winchcombe or up to the castle, as well as other charming little towns and villages nearby. Definitely visit The Lion pub for a meal in the village - food was great and the service was really friendly. The accommodation itself was a little disappointing in parts, feeling musty and a bit unloved on arrival. This is a super old building so we expected character, but the layer of dust in the lounge was off-putting, as was the mildew on some of the windows. It all just feels as if it could do with a freshen up to bring it back to its best. Bedding and towels were lovely and clean and there was plenty of hot water!

Weekend Stay at Sudeley Castle Cottages

Verified Up Front Reviews
Lovely 2 day stay in Winchcombe. Cottage was situated very close to the centre. Accomodation great for 4 people. Well equipped and tastefully dressed. Just a couple of suggestions- windows in bedrooms need a better clean, sofa needs some attention. Other than these observations, would definitely book again.

Lynne

Lovely place and area.

Sophia

I would definitely stay again, and would highly recommend it to other people. Such a beautiful place to be - thank you!

Kerri

Good central location for exploring Cotswolds, cottage what would be termed as "tired" needs refresh

Verified Up Front Reviews
On entry to the building the cleanliness was very poor, on entry to the apartment we found multiple cobwebs on windows and Louvre sky lights, just lazy cleaning in our opinion. Clients asked to clear rubbish, strip beds, vacuum, and tidy towels in order to assist cleaners. We assume the allows more time for cleaning but this is not indicated inn St Kinelmn apartment. This is our 6th annual trip to the Cotswolds and the most disappointing accommodation

Les

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us on your recent stay at St Kenelm. We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the cleanliness of the property and the entrance. Your valuable feedback has been shared with the property manager, who has confirmed that the cottage and entrance were thoroughly cleaned prior to your arrival. They will be speaking with the housekeeping team to ensure this does not happen again, and the cobwebs and skylights will be cleaned as soon as possible. We hope to see you in the Cotswolds again soon.

Very nice cottage with well equipped kitchen and spacious bathroom. Good location with lots to do around Winchcombe.

Julian

A great base for exploring the Cotswolds. Comfortable and very well located.

Lynda

The position was lovely, very peaceful. Great for exploring the area on foot or by car. The accommodation was very tastefully done in very attractively renovated old buildings. it has a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable lounge area. Beds really comfortable too with good wardrobe space for a short stay. Great shower!

Super Location

Verified Up Front Reviews
This was our first stay in Sudeley Castle cottages and found it to be an excellent facility for daily commuting to Cheltenham Racecourse and for evening dining options in Winchcombe. Property standards and condition excellent. We will be staying again next year but in an alternative property, on the estate, having found St Kenelm already taken. The ease of booking and notification details from Bolthole Retreats were first class.

In need of maintenance

Verified Up Front Reviews
While for the most part the property was clean and comfortable it’s showing signs of wear and tear, dated decor and poor maintenance. Perhaps the most important is that the lights on the stairs and landing didn’t work. This is a serious health and safety hazard and the property should not be let again until remedied. The carpet was stained in places, and while creaking floorboards might be expected in an older property, squeaky hinges and the all the doors aren’t acceptable, when a can of oil is all it takes. On the upside, the location is great and it was good value for money.

Robert

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us on your recent stay at St Kenelm. We are delighted to hear that you liked the cottage and its beautiful location, however, disappointed to read the points that you have raised. Your feedback has been passed along to the property manager, who is already looking into these matters. They’ve also mentioned that they would have been more than happy to assist with the lighting issue during your stay, and wish that you had contacted them. Also an electrician has already booked to resolve the matter.

Xmas in the Cotswalds

Verified Up Front Reviews
Had a great time at St Kenelm, property had tons of character and was perfect for a family of four for an extended stay. The village is amazing, and so close to walk to.

Jeff

Was probably nice a few years ago….

Verified Up Front Reviews
Terrible smell inside the fridge so had to clean with antibacterial wipes, poorly maintained (missing tap covers, no privacy film on panel next to toilet, lots of small easy fixable issues) and absolutely full of flies. Left early and emailed company- their response was….thanks for letting us know!

Guest

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay at St Kenelm. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. The property manager is available to promptly address any issues that arise during a guest’s stay, so we do wish you had reached out at the time. Since receiving your comments, we’ve communicated with them to ensure the unpleasant odor in the fridge and the lack of privacy film on the bathroom window are addressed. In regard to the presence of cluster flies, the house manager did fog the property prior to your arrival and will now conduct an additional treatment. As you may know, older properties can occasionally be prone to cluster flies, and while we make every effort to control them, they can sometimes appear unexpectedly. We appreciate your input on the maintenance aspects, and these have been passed on for immediate attention. Providing a high standard of accommodation is very important to us, and your feedback helps us make improvements for future guests. Thank you again, and we hope you might consider visiting us again to enjoy a more seamless experience.

A short break in Winchcombe

Verified Up Front Reviews
We enjoyed a visit to the Cotswolds, staying at St Kenelm apartment in the grounds of Sudeley Castle. Well located, comfortable accommodation, with the benefit of free entry to Sudeley Castle during our stay. Very handy to be on the outskirts of the village of Winchcombe and had a very tasty meal at Winchcombe Restaurant (Indian cuisine).

Excellent personal service

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our flight to London from the US was delayed for twelve hours, so it was 2:00 am by the time we reached Winchcombe and our accommodations at the Sudeley Castle Cottages. I was able to communicate with the management, and we were blessed to locate, enter and settle into our cottage with no hassle. A great blessing for weary travellers in the middle of the night! Beautiful and convenient location!

A weekend stay at Sudeley

Verified Up Front Reviews
It seemed like the perfect combination. A desire to re visit Sudeley Castle and to stay at Sudeley Castle Cottages, which is only a short walk through glorious countryside to the castle. Specifically thinking about St Kenelm which was spacious, comforting and very clean, it had everything we needed for our accommodation. The fixtures, fittings and furniture are of an extremely high standard and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering staying there. The castle itself was a ten minute walk and pubs in Winchcombe were a mere five minute stroll! (The White Hart was particularly good). An excellent weekend was had by all.

Chris

Lovely in Spring

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a lovely stay in May, but I am not sure if it would be lovely all year round. The bedrooms, which are right under the roof, were very warm - in high summer they would be extremely hot. There were also an awful lot of stairs! But apart from that, the apartment was very clean and well furnished; the kitchen was also very well equipped. It's a short stroll into town with some very good eateries and shops and a beautiful walk across to Sudeley Castle. We would definitely consider staying here again, especially as there's plenty of parking, which my husband considers to be essential.

Jillian

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay at St Kenelm. We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay however we are disappointed to read your feedback regarding the roof and the stairs. On our website listing we state that the property is a first floor apartment and that there are a number of steps. This is also shown on our floorplan.

Staying In St Kenelm

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a lovely stay here; while there were a few cars in the carpark, we didn’t really see anyone else and it didn’t feel busy, which was nice. The location is fantastic for walking and there was plenty to do for the 3 days we stayed. The castle is fantastic and my two boys loved it so much, we visited twice! We also found everyone to be really friendly. The cottage had everything we needed and made for a comfortable stay.

Short stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had an enjoyable short stay at St Kenelm. We found a lot of flies in the property - dead & alive, a quick vacuum & open windows did the trick. One of our group got stuck in the bathroom as door handle required 2 downward movements to open from the inside! She failed to open the door each time she used the bathroom! So maybe someone could look at the mechanism. The walk around Sudeley castle was fantastic & as it was free balanced out the cleaning expense added to the rental charge.

St Kenelm Cottage

Verified Up Front Reviews
The cottages are in an outstanding area near the Castle (10 min walk) in Winchcombe with plenty of parking. There are a number of national trust properties and gardens to visit in the area and I would certainly recommend a good weeks’ stay. The village is also a delight with plenty of eating places, reasonably priced, and quaint little shops. There are also a number of local walks - all provided in the information pack in the cottage. The cottage was certainly as described - a home from home with everything you could wish for and a lovely welcome pack of coffee, tea, mints, milk and biscuits etc. I would certainly not hesitate to book again… 10/10 for a great break.

Long way up two flights of stairs

Verified Up Front Reviews
I the guide it says not suitable for people with disabilities however it doesn’t describe the two very steep steps going up to the second floor level of the accommodation. There are several electrical faults in the property the stairway to the second floor has been wired incorrectly. If it’s switched off from the second floor it will not operate from first floor stairs access. Also the bathroom mirror light has intermittent fault and the co2 alarm has no power. The fan in the bathroom also doesn’t work

Edward

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We can confirm that the maintenance team have checked all points raised and have confirmed that everything is in good working order, and the alarm is battery-operated and will beep when running low. The main power switch to the fan had been switched off by a previous guest.

Our wedding in Winchcombe

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed at St Kenelm for the entire weekend of our wedding. First night I (the bride) stayed at the cottage with my two best friends - Girls night! And we all go ready at the cottage together with several other of my girl friends coming by to hang out and have mimosas. The cottage was perfect for this, not just because of it's super central location but also because it has the downstairs living room area. The cottage is spacious and had all the amenities that we needed. After the wedding my husband and I stayed there for 2 nights and when we locked the key inside the apartment, Bolthole Retreats sorted us out straight away, despite it being a Sunday. They made it super easy by just leaving another key in the outside key box. I would happily stay at the cottages again and highly recommend them for anybody who wants to visit the beautiful Winchcombe. The only upgrade I could think of for St Kenelm would be a balcony and maybe a downstairs toilet. One bathroom in a cottage for 4 people isn't always enough. But other than that, everything was perfect. Thank you! We will be back to celebrate our anniversary :-)

Lovely apartment

Verified Up Front Reviews
Everything was great. A few comments - There was not much cupboard space to store food. There was no chance for food waste recycling - however I understand this could be problematical. The bathroom mirror light stopped working during our stay. The rear of the entrance door was rather marked/ paint chipped.

Paula

Enjoyed Our Stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
Updated, modern and comfortable. A bit pricey but well equipped - especially liked that there is a washer/dryer. Main floor furniture is getting a little worn but it was clean. Quiet location with a short walking distance into Winchcombe. Liked that the rental included free access into the Castle and its beautiful gardens - and the gift shop has good quality, interesting items. ( Tip: If you're walking, especially if you're pulling luggage, be sure to ask a local person for the the back route from Winchcombe - to the right of the White Hart Inn- that will get you to the Sudeley Castle Cottages. It is a MUCH shorter and easier route than the main road into Sudeley Castle grounds. )

Delightful place to stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed in St Kenhelm for a friends wedding at Sudeley Castle. The accommodation was perfectly placed for this and was a delight to stay in. Beautifully kept and styled the apartment had all the facilities and utensils that we would require during our stay. Walking distance to the castle but also into Winchcombe made the search for a cafe with a hangover a little more bearable! The service is great from start to finish with very approachable emails and if (like us) you do manage to lock yourself out of the room at night, there is security who can come and unlock it for you. Overall great place to stay especially if attending an event at the castle

Good for a short break

Verified Up Front Reviews
Enjoyable break on the Sudeley Castle Estate, staying in St Kenelm apartment. The apartment was very well equipped, warm and clean. Just a 3 minute walk up to the High Street where there were good pubs serving excellent meals. Winchcombe is a pretty old town. We were informed that there would be building work going on nearby and that noise might be a problem. For us, this did not prove an issue as we are early risers. The builders did not start until after 8 a.m. Would recommend to others wanting a base in The Cotswolds.

Well designed and furnished modern apartment, but a couple of drawbacks to be aware of.

Verified Up Front Reviews
We have stayed at Sudely Castle Cottages several times and when making this booking St Kenelm was the only available 'cottage'. It is actually an apartment on the third/fourth floor of a converted paper mill. The apartment itself is absolutely fine, no complaints or issues. However, be aware that that there are lots of stairs. On the booking form it does say not suitable for people with mobility issues. We do not have mobility issues, but regularly climbing long flights of stairs, sometimes with heavy luggage, was not fun. Our only other issue was that there was no outside area for us to use when back at base and relaxing.

Peter

Dear Peter, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at St Kenelm at Sudeley Castle. Your comments and feedback are much appreciated and we hope you enjoyed your time in Winchcombe. Kind regards Bolthole Retreats

What an amazing place

Verified Up Front Reviews
This apartment is well situated with a lovely view down into the courtyard and, from the bedroom, the sounds and a glimpse of the river. The bedrooms were excellent - comfy beds, and the kitchen well supplied. I would have liked to be able to turn the fan off in the bathroom but it was a good size and well appointed and very clean. Downstairs it had comfortable sofas and a really well equipped kitchen but the table and some of the paintwork needs a little attention. It was wonderful to be able to go to Sudeley Castle for free. I would definitely stay here again.

Nice complex but not cheap

Verified Up Front Reviews
The flat was decked out with all mod cons, it was slightly frustrating that it took 3 days to find the instruction manuals in the cupboard under the sink though. On arrival there was no hot water due to low pressure but a quick call and visit and this was fixed. It was comfortable and warm and well appointed, the price was high but that's what you get for having to book in half term......one thing I did object to was paying £70 for the flat to be cleaned on top of the rental price for the week, surely this should be within the £850 for the week? Don't show the price as £850 then add on £70, if you have no choice just say it's £920 and then you can do a realistic comparison.

A lovely Cotswold escape

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a lovely time last weekend, a much needed escape for a few nights. The property was spotless and the accommodation was extremely comfortable. We enjoyed walks around the surrounding area and a night out at the nearby White Hart Inn where the teenagers voted the chocolate brownie dessert one of the best ever ! The castle staff were very friendly, unfortunately we weren't able to see inside the castle much due to covid restrictions but the sun came out for a while when we were able to enjoy the grounds. We hope you are able to re-open your doors soon !

3 days at St Kenelm

Verified Up Front Reviews
Cleanliness was actually very good apart from numerous and regular flies/dead flies throughout our stay. No idea where they came from but they kept appearing! Whilst the apartment appeared to have been redecorated throughout, the main door was very grubby. And the dining table let down the rest of the furnishings. 2 H&S matters: (1) we found that the light switch for the landing from downstairs HAD to be kept in the on position. If turned off, it was not possible to light the landing from upstairs - potentially a little dangerous considering the different levels. (2) a grab handle/rail could be installed over the shower bath. Personally, I found the bath side quite high (higher than my own similar shower bath) and the older person would find comfort in having a handle to hold on to! The accommodation was generally excellent though I found the small bedroom VERY small, with little space between the bed and the wall, especially with a footboard on the bed with small upstanding posts, hidden by the duvet! AND the bedroom door did not shut. It appears to have been repainted recently and the paintwork towards the top of the door is binding on the door jamb. Finally, I don't think it's totally clear from your information that access is by steps, and then further stairs to the accommodation. We had booked for 3 adults but 1 did not come because of concerns regarding Covid. She lives in a bungalow, has in the past fallen down stairs, and is generally very cautious of stairs. She would not have been very happy. She is otherwise a fairly fit and agile person.

Excellent stay

Had a fab time here, apartment was just what we wanted, enjoyed visiting the castle (a couple of times). Very central for good day trips out, wouldn't hesitate to return.

Excellent break

We’ve now stayed in Winchcombe for a few years in a row around the same time and can’t fault the accommodation. Excellent location, comfortable beds, and everything you need for a great stay.

My mini Port Meirion

Verified Up Front Reviews
We found this cottage extremely difficult to locate and very few of the locals, who were very friendly, were unable to help. Once found, it reminded me of Port Meirion back home, a little piece of heaven on earth. It is a beautiful place but St Kenelm's is NOT suitable for anyone with a disability. There were 2 flights of stairs before getting into the flat which was a killer and we had to struggle to get my dialysis machine up. However, this did NOT deter my enjoyment of the short break. There are no grab rails in the bathroom which again is difficult for some. Also, be aware that it is work in progress and there is quite a lot of noise in the mornings. If you visit Winchcombe you MUST go to the haunted CORNER CUPBOARD (book first) The service in the restaurant is brilliant and Jack (our young waiter) kept his cool went I became seriously ill at the table. The food is EXCELLENT and 1 dish is enough to feed an army. They will give you a smaller portion if you ask for it. It was close enough to visit Sudeley castle, Chedworth Roman villa. Hailles, Tewkesbury and Pershore abbies. On the whole, the property was immaculate apart from 2 dead flies in the bath and a small spider on the toilet seat. Also, it said in the book there should be torches but we didn't find any. All in all, it is a beautifulI awe inspiring. place and I highly recommend it. I hope to go back but to a ground floor flat.

First time to cottages

Verified Up Front Reviews
The cottage was very nice and comfortable. The location to Sudeley castle was Great. I tried to do laundry but did have some trouble with getting clothes dried. That was the only thing that was wrong. We would love to come back our next time to the Cotswolds!

Mini break

Verified Up Front Reviews
What a lovely location for a mini break. The cottages were so pretty and a great base to explore the area. An added bonus, a trip to Sudeley Castle which turned out to be free when staying at the cottage. A couple of housekeeping issues, lights in the hallway not working and a hoard of flies, which we reported, but didn’t stop us having a very relaxing break.

A highlight of out trip

Verified Up Front Reviews
The cottages were beautfiful inside and out. They are very close to the castle, whereby we walked across a field of sheep, that my kids absolutely loved. The town is only a few minutes' walk, which was very convenient for meals and snacks. The town itself is very nice, and our trip to the castle was amazing. The suite had all the required amenities, including laundry, which was helpful on our long trip. It was a perfect place to stay, and our only regret was that we didn't book a longer stay.

Mini Cotswold break

Comfortable apartment in a beautiful location. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Enjoyed our walk around Sudeley castle, especially the gardens. Would definitely stay again.

Beautiful cottage!

Verified Up Front Reviews
I certainly didn't expect the attention to detail this cottage has! It has everything you need and the whole place is immaculate. We could only stay 2 nights but I would of gladly lived there indefinitely. Charming, convenient to Winchecombe and beautifully kept. Will return for sure!

Ideal place for guests to stay when going to wedding at Sudeley Castle

Verified Up Front Reviews
The cottage has both historical interesting features as well as the modern features to make our stay really comfortable. The only thing lacking was a place to hang our wet coats after the three of us were caught in a torrential downpour!! The shower was greeted with great delight for its wonderful power and the bathroom itself was really spacious. All the bedrooms were well equipped with really comfortable beds. We were very impressed with the range of equipment in the kitchen, and the dishwasher was a real bonus. We didn't spend much time in the living room but it had everything we needed. And last but not least the views of the other buildings round the courtyard were amazing!!

Best holiday cottage we've ever had.

Verified Up Front Reviews
This is a charming cottage in a perfect setting; we awoke to a view from the bedroom of a brook running by and birds singing. Winchcombe is a perfect centre for exploring the Cotswolds and is itself a pretty village. There is plenty of history around, and many walks to explore. Free entry to the castle, only a short walk across the field, was a boon. We visited several times. The cottage was very clean and finished to a very high standard- wooden beams, solid wood furniture, comfortable settees and good facilities. There was ample parking on site too. We were surprised that there didn't appear to be anywhere onsite for recycling anything, though. We found. it to be very quiet and restful, but we were there during the school term.

Winchcombe Winter Wonderland

Verified Up Front Reviews
A fabulous setting within walking distance of the high street and some lovely pubs. Very little to fault, but, even though it was December, the apartment had flies in the bedrooms and lounge area. They had, or were dying, but there were a lot on the window sills and in one of the single bedrooms particularly. Further snags were the plugs in the bathroom sinks, which were not working properly and the kitchen bin lid did not shut. According to the guest book in the apartment, these were also issues back in November but don’t seem to have been rectified. Well equipped kitchen, but our welcome pack had some items missing which was fresh milk and hot chocolate. Very comfortable beds with lovely fresh bed linen and towels, warm and cosy lounge area with good size TV and the apartment was nicely decorated throughout. Would recommend that Sudeley Cottages consider a “non bench” style kitchen table and chairs as it was quite uncomfortable when sitting for longer periods as we were on Christmas Day. Well positioned for some great walks and a short stroll across the field brings you to the castle. Would certainly return.

Picturesque Location, Would Have Been Perfect But...

Verified Up Front Reviews
This is a lovely 2 story apartment in a quaint setting with other rental properties. We loved the sound of the water behind the building and the new kitchen/bathroom. The free admission to the castle was also a treat. Winchcombe is a wonderful Cotswolds village without too many tourists. However, there were some serious plumbing issues that needed to be addressed. I only mention them because despite being reported nothing was done (I received confirmation of receipt emails) while we were there.

Charming accomodation

Great accommodation set within an area of outstanding beauty. Perfect for relaxing or for touring about the Cotswolds. Perfect for families. Access to Sudley Castle is included in your booking and well worth a visit. Our cottage was well fitted out with all you would want from self catering.

A comfy, warm, well situated apartment. Perfect for a short break; slightly shabby.

Great kitchen. Cosy, comfy accommodation. Some disrepair let it down a little. Need a mirror in bedrooms! Sure we'll be back as comfort and location are great. We had a fab stay - thanks.

4 night family stop over

Excellent family cottage in a great central location for the Cotswolds, Bath, Avebury and Warwick and only a short drive from Heathrow Airport. Just a pity we didn't have more time to enjoy more of the local sites.

Very comfortable apartment for a weekend break. Not the easiest place to find, but once there, it is a quiet location, walking distance from the village.
