Broadway Walking and Cycling Guide
From the Capability Brown tower to quiet hamlets
You are always guaranteed a fantastic welcome in Broadway with its wide high street lined with Cotswold stone cottages, friendly pubs, independent shops and quaint tea rooms. With the Cotswold Way running through the village it is the perfect destination for walking and cycling. Discover a section of this National Trail or forge your own path out into the countryside. While in Broadway, visiting the tower is a must and there are circular routes taking you to this marvellous viewpoint where you can see across the village to the hills beyond. From Broadway you aren’t far from Chipping Campden and Dover’s Hill where the Cotswold Olimpicks are held and which also offers great views across the countryside.
Suggested Broadway Walks
Using the Cotswold Way as a starting point, there are many circular walks that loop from this main pathway, many of which can be made longer or shorter depending on how adventurous you’re feeling and what the weather decides to do that day!
A walk from Broadway up to the tower and back takes up to three hours (but we’d recommend taking your time and stopping for a picnic when you get to the top and spending time watching over the deer park).
Take a day to head further afield to Stanton for a five-hour circular walk where you can include a pub lunch on the way. When you reach the small village after walking along the Cotswold Way and passing woodlands, take time to explore this hidden beauty spot and stop off at The Mount Inn to catch your breath.
National Trust-owned Snowshill Manor can be reached from Broadway but it is a steep climb taking up to five hours there and back with some of the route along roads. It is worth the effort though and you can take some time once you reach Snowshill and visit the Manor which is filled with wonderful and unusual items collected by the original owner, Charles Wade.
Nearby Chipping Campden is famously the start of the Cotswold Way, though some would argue that depends which way you’re walking. Following the beginning of the Cotswold Way, you head from Broadway up to the tower, the only steep section of the walk, to then meander along the trail to Dover’s Hill where the Cotswold Olimpicks are held. Down into Chipping Campden you reach the end of this pathway and you could either enjoy a pub lunch and head back, or take advantage of the bus route to Broadway.
Broadway Cycling Routes
Broadway might be well known for its tower up on the hill, but that doesn’t mean a bike ride here has to be an Olympic feat.
Around Broadway you will generally find the streets to be quite quiet, and drivers will expect cyclists. A fairly level route takes you through Willersey, across to Badsey on the fringes of Evesham before going up and around on a country lane to reach Pebworth, Mickleton and back down through Weston-sub-Edge to Broadway. With views across farmland and pretty villages to cycle through this is a lovely route for exploring.
Another route which mainly follows single track roads takes you to the small hamlets of Wormington and Laverton. This peaceful bike ride will blow away the cobwebs and show you the quiet back roads behind the scenes of the Cotswolds.
