Things to see and do in the Cotswolds this year

The calendar of Cotswold events is always full to the brim no matter what time of the year you visit. In between attending these spectacular occasions, you will find beauty throughout the region during each season. Winter is a festive wonderland of Christmas markets, sparkling lights and roaring fires. Spring brings its blooming blossoms and the rumbling of hooves at Cheltenham Racecourse. In Summer you can take full advantage of the great weather at outdoor pools and historic festivals. When Autumn rolls around the Cotswold woodlands become a feast of colours and you can fill your days with cultural delights.

Winter

Stargazing at the Rollright Stones – As darker nights draw in, why not make the most of it? The Rollright Stones are a collection of ancient standing stones in rural countryside in the northern Cotswolds. Designated as a Dark Sky Discovery Site you have fantastic views across the surrounding area. The skies above light up with glorious twinkling stars. Wrap up warm and head out on a clear night to be rewarded with this show from nature.
Hit the slopes at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre – Even if you don’t get any snow, you can still hit the slopes in the Cotswolds. Gloucester ski is home to the longest dry ski slope in England and caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Lessons are available if you’ve never tried it before.
Enjoy a Cosy Pub Lunch – The Cotswolds are home to some fantastic country pubs and Winter is one of the best times to spend time discovering your favourite. With open beams, flagstone floors and plenty of choices with an open fire, you won’t find a cosier spot. Take a walk through the glorious countryside before rewarding yourselves with a hearty meal and a pint of your favourite in front of the crackling flames. Even better if it’s a pet friendly pub, your dog can join you!
Walking Roman Cirencester – Join archaeologist Dr Alison Grierson-Brookes on a discovery tour of Roman Cirencester and the Corinium Museum. On this combined walking tour and museum visit you see parts of the historic walls and the impressive amphitheatre. Book online through the Corinium Museum.
Spring

Forage and hunt for bluebells – During April and May woodlands across the Cotswolds turn a gentle shade of blue. There are lots of spots you can go for a Springtime walk and see the best that the bluebells have to offer. Lineover and Dowdeswell Woods deliver both bluebells and wild garlic, all of your senses are in for a treat here.
Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Festival Gala – Celebrate the history of the Cotswold steam railway over the May Bank Holiday. The spectacle of steam trains rolling through the countryside is a magical site. This heritage event gives you the chance to see them up close. The displays teach you about the impact these trains had on the region and there will be vintage carriages and artefacts on display.
Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup 100 – The famous Gold Cup began in 1924 and this year we celebrate 100 years of this prestigious race. It is set to be a spectacular day with the historic race taking place on the 15th March. Tickets are already selling fast so if you want to be part of this significant event, don’t wait to get booked in!
Prescott Hill Climb – April sees the beginning of the competitive season for Prescott Hill Climb drivers. The route tests their skills with hairpin bends and steep climbs. You can join the action as a spectator on the sidelines. If you’re feeling adventurous sign yourself up for a Prescott Hill Climb School day and get your own white knuckle ride.
Icons of British Fashion at Blenheim Palace – Get ‘behind the seams’ of some of the UKs biggest names in fashion. Each room at Blenheim Palace will be dedicated to a different designer. From Stella McCartney to Vivienne Westwood this is an iconic display in the perfect setting.
Summer

Have a splash about at Bath Lido – Built in 1825, the public outdoor swimming pool at Bathampton is the oldest in the UK. With a dedicated children’s pool and a main pool, the whole family can spend time together making the most of the good summer weather. We recommend that you book in advance as it is a popular spot that can get busy.
Follow the Ox Trail in Oxford – The first ever sculpture trail to come to Oxford is the Ox Trail. This herd of oxen decorated by local artists, schools and youth groups will fill the streets for eight weeks. Follow the trail and spot the whole herd before they are auctioned off to raise money for Sobell House Hospice.
Go back in time at Tewkesbury Medieval Festival – Relive the Battle of Tewkesbury and step back in time to 1471. It was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses and the re-enactment is accompanied by live commentary. As well as watching the knights, warriors and canons enter the battle, you can wander the medieval market and shop for unusual and unique items.
Watersports at Cotswold Lakes – A holiday in the Cotswolds is the perfect chance to try something new. Cotswold Water Park gives you the opportunity to get out on the water, either in a kayak, canoe, on a paddle board, or on fun inflatables. The options are endless here and you will have a fantastic time, even if you do end up getting a bit wet by the end of the day!
Autumn

See the fiery leaves of Autumn at Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons – Known for providing some of the best views in the Cotswolds, this area is especially beautiful when the leaves start changing their colours. Amongst the trees you will spot swathes of orchids, wildflowers and rare butterflies. It is also a fantastic place to fly a kite so we recommend bringing yours along.
Giddy Up at Blenheim and Cornbury Horse Trials – September brings four days of eventing at Blenheim Palace and Cornbury. Dressage, show jumping and cross-country events see riders competing for the top spot. At each location you will find options for drinking and dining, and shopping with local brands.
Feel like a King or Queen at Sudeley Castle and Gardens – One of the most beautiful castles in England, Sudeley has intricate bedrooms, a library and ruins to explore. The gardens are split into ten distinct areas which each have their own planting style. Bolthole Retreats guests receive discounted entry.
Fantastic free history with Heritage Open Days – Every September historic sites open their doors to put on free events. It is a chance to see hidden places you might not usually get the opportunity to. Check their website for specific opening times and to see where will be opening their doors during this year’s Heritage Open Days.
Put on your Regency glad rags and head to the Jane Austen Festival – The stunning city of Bath is the celebrated home of Jane Austen and every year fans of the author gather. Exquisite costumed balls, lectures and tours bring the regency era to life. Covering ten days, the Jane Austen festival is an internationally renowned event not to be missed.
