Posted: Thu, 28th Nov 2024

Resting within the North Wessex Downs area of outstanding natural beauty, Marlborough is a beautiful place with a lot of buzz. Its famous high-street is dappled with bijoux stores and cafes, art galleries, and a twice-weekly market. If you’re looking for things to do in Marlborough, let us give you a vicarious snoop into local living. Read our top tips for the best spots in this glorious market town.

Savour the Flavours

Embark on a gastronomic journey through Marlborough and explore some of the most delightful cafes and pubs. Situated on the high street, Bunce’s café is a must visit. This sweet all day eatery has everything you need; from an eclectic brunch selection to a refined and understated evening menu, what’s not to love. They also have tasty bakes available for you to grab and go. Enjoying the eateries is among the top things to do in Marlborough.

Rick Stein’s restaurant graces the high street; an indulgent spot to dine and the perfect place to treat yourself on your staycation. This famous restaurant is a celebration of what Rick Stein does best: fresh fish and shellfish take centre stage, ready for guests to enjoy – perhaps with a glass of something sparkling! Head back to your bolthole after a feast and flop onto your sofa in front of the fire.

If you fancy heading further afield than the characterful high-street, The Red Lion in East Chinesbury (near Pewsey) is a 20-minute drive away. The pub is Wiltshire’s only 3 AA Rosette Pub and a celebrated gastronomic destination. The Red Lion offers delicious fare packed with bold, natural flavours, all set in a charming country pub atmosphere.

Shop ’til You Drop

Shopping is also one of the top things to do in Marlborough. The market town is somewhat of a honeypot for the independent creatives, buzzing with boutique delights. There are quirky independent shops scattered along each side of the street filled with divine goodies. Antiques, clothing, jewellery, art… take your pick.

White Horse Bookshop is an indelible fixture of Marlborough high-street, which not only sells books, but art supplies as well as art pieces. They also run art classes, and the staff are always ready for a natter and to share their own recommendations.

Curate is also a must-visit; a boutique with a selection of hand-picked brands showcasing their best items. Even better, the brands are selected on their sustainable and ethical values. Guilt-free shopping, here we come.

Make sure to also visit Willow & Wolf Boutique, The Cat’s Whiskers Antique Shop, Blanchard Collective Antiques and Nova Fine Art.

Escape to the Countryside

The market town is ideally located for exploring the countryside and is surrounded by National Trust spots; another fantastic thing to do whilst in Marlborough. The world-renowned Stourhead House and landscape garden is packed with natural beauty and the area invites visitors to spend a day immersed in nature and discovery. Lacock Abbey, an architectural haven, is also nearby and offers a wonderful day out exploring its monastic history. The village of Lacock is worth a wander – wear yourself out with adventure and then head back to your bolthole for a relaxing evening.

Endless Adventures

If you’re looking for something a little different, Ramsbury Estate is home to a distillery and brewery offering guided tours. The estate is only a 15-minute drive from Marlborough so why not head over for a lesson in distilling? You can even bring back a bottle of delicious gin to enjoy in your home away from home.

The Merchants House, once described as ‘The Showpiece of Marlborough’s High Street’ is The House of Thomas Bayly, a silk mercer. You can book a guided tour and explore the ongoing work to restore the house. Touring The Merchants House is surely among the most unique things to do in Marlborough, so definitely pop in and enjoy the gems of the gift shop, too.
