The best pubs in Wiltshire

Posted: Fri, 20th Dec 2024

Wiltshire, with its rolling countryside, charming villages, and historic towns, is home to some of the finest pubs in England. Whether you’re seeking a traditional country inn or a trendy gastropub with seasonal fare, this beautiful county has something for everyone. So, grab a seat, raise a glass, and let’s explore the top spots to enjoy a perfect pub experience in this picturesque corner of England.

The Potting Shed, Crudwell

The Potting Shed is a true champion of the countryside’s bounty and remote beauty. Sourcing their produce locally, this pub is creative, British and seasonal. The sister of the fabulous Rectory Hotel, The Potting Shed offers a slightly more casual dining experience than its older brother but without compromise on quality. You’ll find locals propping up the bar, dogs and wellies dotted around aplenty, and a bright and beautiful restaurant serving the best of British grub.

The Bradley Hare, Warminster

This pretty pub has been sensitively restored yet its interior still lends itself to its Coaching Inn roots. Set within the grounds of the Duke of Somerset’s estate on the Wiltshire-Somerset border, this pub really provides the ultimate authentic countryside experience. There are atmospheric corners and hand selected antiques in most directions you turn, creating a sense of informal luxury. When it comes to dining, The Bradley Hare has an ironically revolutionary policy: food not to be messed around with. The team pride themselves on their ‘authentic, unpretentious and flawlessly executed’ menu. Definitely one to visit.

The Rattlebone Inn, Sherston

Once the stomping ground of princes William and Harry, The Rattlebone Inn is somewhat of an institution amongst locals. That’s not to say you won’t receive a warm welcome, though. This pub is one that many find themselves travelling miles across the country to visit, and we can understand why; foodies are welcomed just as much a drinkers. With its mix of modern country dishes and pub classics and an interior of mishmash tables and roaring fires it’s a place that feels like a proper boozer packed with buckets of character.

The Red Lion, Castle Eaton

The first pub on the River Thames. That’s reason enough to visit, surely? If that doesn’t swing it for you, the genuinely breathtaking views from the garden and conservatory definitely will. In a break with tradition we can appreciate, the chefs at The Red Lion have curated a menu that offers tapas style small plates, pizzas, classic British mains as well as an infamous Tomahawk steak. Although there is a vast choice on the menu, every dish is as delicious as the other. This really is exceptional eating in a sensational setting.

The Beckford Arms, Tisbury

The charming, ivy-clad Beckford Arms is an 18th Century gem. The menu is bursting with flavour and the stylish decor strikes the perfect balance between rustic charm and contemporary chic. Whether you’re curling up by the fire with a pint of local ale or dining under the soft glow of the shimmering chandelier in the restaurant, the pub simply exudes convivial atmosphere. Also, the constantly evolving and increasingly trendy village of Tisbury is only a short drive away. Although, chances are, you’ll struggle to pull yourself away from this delightful pub.
