A truly unique cottage heralding the entrance to historic Sudeley Castle and its magnificent gardens, the Castle Gatehouse is a dog-friendly property that comfortably sleeps 4 guests in two en-suite bedrooms. The Gatehouse is split into two wings, accessed by separate doors. On one side you have a four-poster bed master bedroom with en-suite shower room. On the other side you enter the kitchen/diner, going upstairs to the living area and then up into the second king size bedroom with en-suite shower room. The unique layout of this property makes it ideal for two couples wanting the privacy of their own space whilst sharing kitchen/diner and living areas.
Guests staying at the Castle Gatehouse enjoy complimentary (other than separately ticketed events) day-time entrance to Sudeley Castle & Gardens during the open season.
Please be aware that under no circumstances are additional guests above the maximum capacity allowed at the property, for day visits or overnight stays. If you are found to be in breach of this, you will be asked to leave the property and reported.
Booking the Castle Gatehouse is akin to booking your very own miniature castle for your stay at Sudeley! The former gatekeeper’s house marks the entrance to the castle grounds and has been converted and restored to provide comfortable accommodation for up to four guests over its unique layout. Its ancient and impressive structure is complemented with symmetrical gardens lined with iron railings and a stone courtyard in the centre.
The accommodation is arranged such that Bedroom One, with its four-poster bed and en-suite shower room, is accessed via a separate door, in one wing of the Gatehouse. Across the courtyard is another door, leading into a well-equipped kitchen with a dining table and chairs for four guests, a utility area with stairs leading up to a beautifully furnished, cosy living area and additional separate WC just off the landing. A further seven steps will take you to Bedroom Two, a spacious room with a king-size double bed. A few steps down will lead you to the en-suite shower room, with a concealed washing machine and tumble dryer.
Outside, guests can admire the pastoral views that line the driveway to the castle from two individually gated gardens, a mirror image of each other, neatly connected by a shared patio in the middle with an outdoor dining table and chairs.
Please note, as per the floor plan, the bedrooms have separate entrances across a courtyard and are not joined.
Bedroom One & En-Suite Shower Room:
To your left when facing the Castle Gatehouse is a door into Bedroom One, a sumptuous four-poster bedroom with a decorative fireplace, wardrobe and shelves, bedside tables and its own private en-suite shower room with walk-in shower, WC and washbasin.
Head across the courtyard and enter through the opposite door into the:
A thoughtfully laid-out and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a dining table and chairs for 4 people, toaster, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, oven and 4 ring electric hobs, microwave and dishwasher.
The practical utility area off the kitchen under the stairs is where you’ll find a large free standing fridge/freezer, high chair and stairgate, a floor mop, cushions for the outdoor chairs and even a spare dog bowl and blanket should you need it. Note: the washing machine and tumble dryer are upstairs in the en-suite bathroom.
Separate WC and washbasin.
A beautifully furnished, cosy living room, decorated in rich tones of red, navy blue, black and gold. Relax in front of the flatscreen television and DVD player, surrounded by interesting antique features, such as the beautiful feature tapestry that adorns the wall.
A bright room in the arch of the gatehouse, featuring painted beams, a comfortable king-size bed, a full-length mirror, storage ottomans and bedside tables.
En-Suite Shower Room:
En-suite with wooden floors, large walk-in power shower WC, washbasin, heated towel rail, wardrobe with storage cupboard above. There is also a washing machine and tumble dryer in a concealed cupboard.
The gatehouse benefits from two small, symmetrical, gardens with a wooden table and chairs for four guests, with retractable parasol, in the courtyard patio area that separates the gardens. Please note: although dogs are accepted at the Castle Gatehouse, the gardens are not secure for them. Therefore, all dogs must be kept on a lead at all times when outside.

Supermarkets and Shopping:
The town itself benefits from several small supermarkets, including The Co-Operative Food and Warner’s Budgens, both well-stocked with fresh produce and store cupboard essentials. Vale & Hills Family Butchers offers fantastic, local meat on the town’s high street, with a host of delicious goodies available at North’s Bakery for those in search of a fresh morning loaf.
Wesley House (200 metres)
White Hart Inn (200 metres)
North Street (300 metres)
The Winchcombe Way, a 42-mile figure-of-eight trail centred around the town, offers walkers a great way of discovering the surrounding Cotswold towns and villages section-by-section over the course of a stay, whilst there are plenty of options for those looking for a more casual, leisurely pace within a close radius of the cottage. We recommend the Sudeley Castle Circular walk for a relaxing stroll; a 2-mile loop setting off straight from the cottage’s front door, taking you into the grounds of historic Sudeley Castle - a must-visit for any guest. The 2.5 mile walk to Belas Knap, a Neolithic chambered long barrow sat atop Cleeve Hill, is also a great walk to try from the doorstep, providing you don’t mind the incline.
During your stay at Sudeley Castle Country Cottages you are entitled to free admission to Sudeley Castle and Gardens during the Castle’s open season (except for separately ticketed events). If you wish to visit the Castle and gardens during your stay, please take your room key or booking receipt with you to the admissions desk. Stunning quaint accommodation in a lovely village. The history of the castle just makes the stay. We had deer coming to say hello at night and the stars were so bright. We can’t recommend it enough ... the perfect escape venue
Alexandra - Sept 2021
Great place to stay ! Lovely quirky building in a really nice village with some good pubs and restaurants. Easy access to many areas of the Cotswolds. Includes entry to Sudeley Castle which was a really nicely presented building with bundles of history attached and wasn't as crowded as other parts of the Cotswold we visited!
Darren - Sept 2021
As a family we can honestly say that the gatehouse at Sudeley Castle and the whole experience of the stay combined with visiting the castle and it’s grounds was truly incredible. This has been the best place we have ever stayed at. We have no comments for improvements or enhancements, we can’t pick a fault with anything. If you want to stay in a location that gives you everything then this is the place.

Approaching the Gatehouse, you immediately get that satisfactory feel that you have made a good choice for your stay. A large plot provides ample parking for our two cars and is attractively presented with nice shrubs and cut lawns. The property itself provided well furnished accommodation with an excellent range of amenities and a good supply of basic foods and toiletries. We spent a very relaxed 4 days at the property which provided us with an ideal location for the activities we like to do. Overall an excellent stay at a lovely characterful property.
John - July 2021
Amazing mini castle - we booked a long weekend in late July, this was a very unique and special mini castle. Would highly recommend for a small family or two couples.
Situated just a short walk from the beautiful Cotswold town of Winchcombe, guests will be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do and see and places to eat while staying at the Gatehouse! See ‘Local Amenities’ or the Winchcombe guidebook for more information.
