While the Cotswolds is known for its rolling hills, honey-hued villages, and quintessential English charm, sometimes all you want is a day by the sea (or at least some sand between your toes!). Luckily, there are several great beaches near the Cotswolds that make for a perfect day trip. Whether you’re craving classic seaside fun, peaceful nature, or a sandy spot for a picnic, here are five top picks within easy reach.

Cotswold Country Park and Beach – Cirencester

You don’t have to leave the Cotswolds for a beach day! Cotswold Country Park and Beach, located near Cirencester, offers an inland beach experience that’s perfect for families. With soft sand, safe swimming lagoons, pedalos, picnic spots and adventure playgrounds, it’s ideal for sunny day trips with little ones. Book ahead during peak season to secure your spot on the beach.

Top Tip: Bring a picnic and make the most of the BBQ stations or grab a bite from the onsite cafe.

Severn Beach – South Gloucestershire

Roughly an hour from the Cotswolds, Severn Beach sits at the edge of the River Severn and offers a unique, tranquil experience. While it’s not your classic sandy beach, its a brilliant spot for long walks, wildlife spotting, and views across the Severn Estuary. The Severn Way footpath runs through here, so it’s great for walkers and cyclists.

Good For: Peaceful strolls, birdwatching, and riverside scenery.

Weston-super-Mare Beach – Somerset

If you’re looking for a full-on traditional seaside experience, Weston-super-Mare delivers. Just under two hours from many parts of the Cotswolds, this beach has all the classics: golden sands, donkey rides, amusements, fish and chips, and a lively pier. It’s great for families, couples, and anyone who loves a nostalgic British beach day.

Don’t Miss: The Grand Pier and the incredible tidal range – one of the highest in the world!

Uphill Slipway Beach – nr. Weston-super-Mare

Just as stone’s throw from Weston, Uphill Slipway Beach offers a quieter alternative. With expansive sands and stunning views from the nearby Uphill Nature Reserve, it’s perfect for peaceful walks, dog-friendly outings, and catching the sunset.

Ideal For: Dog walkers, picnics, and uninterrupted sea views.

Penarth Beach – Vale of Glamorgan

The last of the beaches near the Cotswolds, a little further afield but well worth the drive, Penarth Beach near Cardiff blends a traditional seaside vibe with a modern coastal feel. Its pebbly shore and Victorian pier offer a lovely place to stroll, relax, and enjoy the sea air. With a promenade full of cafes and ice cream shops, it’s a delightful day out for couples or families.
