Beaufort Polo Club
Tetbury
Active Experience
The Beaufort Polo Club is the centre of the development of polo within the Cotswolds. It is a fast-paced, exhilarating game and is the oldest ball sport in the world dating back to 600BC. The club is owned by the Tomlinson family, big names in the polo world, who provide a warm welcome.
During the week you can join the crowds to watch a polo match for free. A commentator keeps you up to date with the action and helps explain the rules so don’t panic if your polo knowledge isn’t on point! Keep an eye out for Luke and Mark Tomlinson who play internationally for England. Bring the family and you can spend a full afternoon here, picnicking or enjoying lunch in the polo clubhouse. It is a very relaxed affair and flat shoes are advised. During half time spectators and players tread in the divots created during play. It’s a great excuse to get up close to the ponies.
Beaufort Polo Club also hosts the Festival of Polo. This yearly event celebrates polo with matches and arena attractions. There is also a traditional fun fair and a shopping village to make sure all members of the family are happy.
If you’re more interested in being on the ponies than in the sidelines, the polo school at Beaufort runs lessons and courses for children and adults. You can book individual lessons or courses and there is also a Polo Experience available. During the experience you learn the basic swings and then how to ride for polo. You will enjoy a two-course meal and then get to watch the professionals play after your taster lesson. Everybody can join this activity as you don’t require any riding experience.
The club is just outside Westonbirt, home of the National Arboretum, and it is a spectacular part of the country to be in. Book a cottage nearby so you can enjoy the thrill of this energetic sport that lets you get involved at half time!
