72 Hours at the Cotswold Lakes

Posted: Fri, 26th Apr 2024

There are few places that offer something for everybody and all tastes, but the Cotswold Lakes tick all the boxes.

Just south of Cirencester, this beautiful water park is a blissful holiday destination. With over 180 lakes, miles of footpaths and cycleways through picturesque Cotswold countryside this is a mecca of outdoor activities. This stunning location is a popular destination for both relaxation and high adrenaline adventure. Start your day flying across the lake on waterskis and end it in a haven of tranquillity with a massage. Pack your bags and come with us as we show you how we’d spend 72 hours at the Cotswold Lakes.

Indoor Pool, Lower Mill Estate

Day One

Our collection of Cotswold Lakes properties range from two bedroom retreats to six bedroom family homes. The majority are pet friendly so you don’t need to leave anyone behind! When you first arrive and everyone has rushed off to find their favourite bedroom, enjoy the views from your balcony or terrace and start planning your lakeside holiday.

Pull on Your Walking Boots

A great way to see what the Cotswold Lakes has to offer is by following some of the many footpaths. Hire a bike or pull on your walking boots to explore the 180 lakes where you will see paddle boarders, windsurfers, and giant inflatables, it’s sure to whet your appetite for what you’d like to try out tomorrow!

A Spa Retreat

If you have been lucky enough to book a property which includes spa access on the Lower Mill Estate, we recommend booking a treatment in advance so that you can end your first day relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready for a fantastic night’s sleep so you have the energy for an adventurous second day. The award-winning spa has an indoor and outdoor heated swimming pool. For an invigorating dip try the outdoor cold water pool.

BalliHoo Restaurant, Lower Mill Estate

Day Two

Ballihoo for Breakfast

After a peaceful night, wake up early and if you’re staying on the Lower Mill Estate, head to Ballihoo for breakfast. This on-site restaurant has everything from pastries to a full English to make sure you’re fuelled up. Evening meals are also served here and there is even a dog-friendly menu. If you want to eat at the cottage but don’t want to cook, the pizza shack and coffee hut are available for takeaways.

Activities Aplenty

Why not start your second day with something a bit different? When we said there was something for everyone, really meant it! Power slide a rally car at Cotswold Driving Experience, learn to ride horses at Rein & Shine or head to The Cotswold Range for an archery or air rifle session. We love the range of team activities on offer from South Cerney Outdoor where you and your group can try raft or catapult building and follow the treeline trail.

Lunchtime Grilling

For lunch, book some time at Cotswold Country Park and Beach and rent a BBQ to grill up a feast for the family! Spend some time relaxing on the sandy beach or padding in the water while the children enjoy the adventure playground.

Splashing About

In the afternoon, the adventurous members of your group can try out some new watersports. There are so many options at Cotswold Lakes with stand up paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking or wakeboarding all available. Many spots let you launch your own crafts like South Cerney Outdoor where you can also hire equipment. To learn the ropes, book a taster session where you will also get some handy tips to help you on your way.

A Family Meal

At the end of the day head back to your lake house and cook up a delicious family dinner. All of our cottages have a well-equipped kitchen with everything you will need for your stay. There will be space to dine inside or out so you can make the most of the weather if you’re lucky enough to get some sun!

Cotswold Lakes, Lake View

Day Three

Ball Games

After yesterday’s activities, hopefully the children will let you have a lie-in this morning. When you do eventually climb out of bed, you might want to spend today closer to your lake house. On the Lower Mill Estate there are plenty of on-site facilities to keep you entertained which are available free of charge. With three tennis courts, a multi-use games area, adventure play and outdoor heated swimming pool you can while away the hours being as active as you choose to be.

Slow Fishing

If you have a valid rod licence you can also make the most of the fishing spots here. We advise checking the lake opening dates and availability before heading out. Make the most of it and see if you can escape by yourself to while away a few leisurely hours at the water’s edge.

Pub Grub

Before heading off back home, visit one of the nearby local pubs for a hearty Cotswold lunch. Set on the water’s edge, The Old Boathouse is a lovely spot to stop for lunch or a roast dinner. If you’re heading north it’s worth stopping off in Cirencester, not only is it a beautiful Roman town but there are plenty of options for a great meal. The King’s Head is a popular choice where you can dine in the restaurant, brasserie or on the charming terrace.
